1955 Brandon Regals Tee
Originally founded as the Pacific Coast Hockey League in 1948, the league adopted the Western Hockey League name after absorbing teams from the Western Canada Senior Hockey League in 1952. During the 1960s, the WHL moved into a number of large west coast markets including Los Angeles and San Francisco, and fears that the WHL could become a rival major league was among the factors that finally convinced the NHL to expand. Eventually, the competition for players and opportunity for expansion was won by the NHL and WHA, and the WHL would eventually fold after the 1973-74 season.
