1994 Cleveland Lumberjacks Tee

The Story

The Cleveland Lumberjacks franchise history goes all the way back to the formation of the Muskegon Zephyrs in 1960 - the early days of the IHL. The franchise spent more than 30 seasons in Muskegon, but in the early 1990’s, the IHL began to attract wealthier investors and began to move beyond its upper Midwest roots. Cities like Muskegon were left behind as the league expanded into major cities with promises of large new arenas and much larger fan bases. So in 1992, the Lumberjacks were uprooted out of Muskegon and moved to Cleveland, where the new 20,000-seat Gund Arena was set to open in 1994.  

With little success on the ice after the move, the Cleveland Lumberjacks are best known for acquiring and developing future NHL All-Stars Martin St. Louis and Evgeni Nabakov. The team folded in 2001 after the IHL bubble of the early 90s burst and almost every team faced financial trouble.

Fun fact: In the 1995 hockey action movie Sudden Death starring Jean-Claude van-Damme, Lumberjacks players impersonated the Chicago Blackhawks.
