The Story
The Stingers were a CBA expansion franchise starting play in 1983 who were started by stock broker Jeffrey Fischer who, it turned out, used stolen funds from his clients to start the franchise. He got away with it for an entire season before the Securities & Exchange Commission caught up to him in June 1984.
On the court, the Stingers finished the 1983-84 campaign tied for last place in the CBA’s Eastern Division with a 16-28 record.
In July 1986, new ownership purchased the franchise and relocated the team to Charleston, West Virginia for the 1986-87 CBA season.
