The Story
A true baseball entrepreneur, Herb Hunter, who organized the Tour of Japan, became a something of a “Japanese Tour Impresario” and is largely credited with getting Japanese baseball established on a solid foundation in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He put together three successful tours before Lefty O’Doul took over in 1934. Hunter was known as “Baseball’s Ambassador to the Orient."
The 1922 team featured such stars as Casey Stengel, Herb Pennock, Waite Hoyt, Amos Strunk, George "Highpockets" Kelly, Irish Meusel and others. This team became the first with major leaguers to lose a game to its Japanese hosts.
