The Story
Beginning as in independent, six-team minor league in 1913, the Federal League transitioned to the third major league along with the American and National Leagues for the 1914 season. Known as the "outlaw league" for stealing away players due to its better pay and lack of a reserve clause, the league eventually folded after the 1915 season due to struggling finances, and owners of the American and National Leagues bought out half of the owners (Pittsburgh, Newark, Buffalo, and Brooklyn) of the Federal League teams.
